RBI and Warren Spahn allowed Charlie Goldie to
rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game as the Des Moines Dusters destroyed
the Carolina
Grays by a score of 19 to 1 at Candlestick
Park.
Howard had a big evening at the plate. He popped a two-run clout over the
fence (his 20th of the season)
in the 5th inning, doubled plating two runs in
the 7th inning, smacked a single
plating a run in the 8th inning and
delivered a base-hit in the 9th
inning. Des Moines kept the scorekeepers
busy in the 8th inning with 7
runs on 7 hits and the 9th inning when they had
6 runs on 4 hits. Des
Moines totaled 21 on the night.
The win went to Spahn(13-8) who allowed 1 run in the game. The loss was
charged to Jim Perry(7-12). 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch
and
swung,' Howard said. 'That's it'

Harmon Killebrew lofted one
into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI at Tiger
Stadium as the Kansas City Athletics won in dramatic
fashion coming back to
beat the Oneonta Tigers by the
count of 9 to 5.
Kansas City
had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 6
runners on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Killebrew
who deflated the mood
of the partisan fans when he
belted a three-run homer (his 45th of the
season). Kansas
City had 9 hits for the afternoon.
Gerry Staley(2-1) allowed no
runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the
victory. The loss was charged to
Turk Lown(7-7)
in relief. Eric Melton was
understandably not very
talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly
showered and changed and when
asked about the game had a terse, yet polite
response, 'Hey fellows, that
game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our
guys gave
it their all and played well -
fate just wasn't smilin' on us this afternoon'

Ron Fairly had 5 hits and 3 RBI and Turk Lown shut Potomac down as
the Oneonta
Tigers defeated the league door-mat Potomac Fighting Dems 16 to 15 at
Griffith Stadium.
Oneonta scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded,
Rocky Colavito laced a
base-knock, and an error was also committed.
Fairly
next to the plate and he laced a
single scoring the run. Oneonta lit up
the
scoreboard in the 5th inning
which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits and the
8th inning with 6 runs on 4 hits. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw
the lead change 5 times.
The win went to Jim Kaat(2-3) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Kaat
was helped
out by Lown
who recorded his 10th save. Ed Rakow(0-7)
was tagged with the
loss in relief.
