on, scoring in 7 of the 9

season). Peoria out-hit Kansas City for the game, 18
hits to 15.
The victory was credited to Gene Conley(7-3)
who went 4 and 1/3 innings,

allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6
and 1/3 innings.

WEB GEMS- Top 9th: George Altman robbed Charlie Maxwell
of an extra base hit.
Center fielder Willie Mays had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the
Peoria Chiefs outscored
the Oneonta Tigers 12 to 10.
Mays provided much of the offense. He lashed a single bringing in a run in
the 1st inning, cracked a
two-run shot (his 6th of the season) in the 3rd
inning, doubled knocking in a
run in the 5th inning and doubled in the 7th
inning. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in
5 different innings was
still not enough for Oneonta to
come away with the victory.
Roy Face(3-2) picked up the
victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Mike
McCormick(6-4) was tagged with
the loss. He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 8
hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.
With this win, Peoria has a division leading 38-20
record. They have been 7-3
lately. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, Oneonta
is 2-8 lately and
25-33 on the year.

Willie McCovey blasted a grand
slam as the Wilmington Hornets defeated the
Oneonta Tigers in 15 innings 10 to 6 at Briggs Stadium.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine
innings. Finally, Wilmington
pulled the game out in the 15th
inning. The key offensive moment was
provided by McCovey
who silenced the crowd when he cleared the bases with a
Grand Slam homerun (his 7th of the
season). It was roller coaster of
a game
as the lead change hands 5
times.
Bobby Shantz(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 innings and
allowing
1 run. Paul Foytack(0-1) was the loser
in relief. He was the victim of a
defensive lapse and did not
allow an earned run in the game.

History was made in Potomac as Robin Roberts(3-1)
tossed a no-hitter and the
Potomac Fighting Dems defeated
the Kansas City Athletics by the score of 5 to
0.
Roberts had an evening to remember. Heck, it's one we'll all remember! What a
game at Griffith Stadium! He
walked 3 Kansas City batters. What an
evening
for the fans. They were on the edge of their seats from the
7th inning on.
With every out, the electricity in the air mounted. Potomac totaled 10 on
the night.
Jim Owens(4-1) was given the
loss. He gave up 5 runs and 10 hits in 7
innings. 'You probably have a better chance of winning
the lottery than this
happening,' said Roberts, 'I
don't expect it to sink in for awhile,' he said.
'I'm numb right now, I'm overwhelmed.'

Larry Jackson came through with a solid 8 innings at
Yankee Stadium as the
Peoria Chiefs beat the Carolina Grays by the count of 1
to 0.
The game was decided in the bottom of the 8th
inning. After an out was
recorded, Norm Siebern lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 1st of the
season). Carolina had a chance to come back in the 9th
but they came up
short.
The victory was credited to Jackson(1-0)
who went 8 innings, allowing no runs.
Ryne Duren
got the save, his 2nd. Milt Pappas(0-1) was given the loss. He
gave up just 1 run and 1 hit in
8 innings.
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us
today' Raymond Grasing
said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but
this one was hard to
take.'
