Lightning Strikes Again, Hill Valley Repeats

    The 1959 World Series was a rematch of the Fall Classic that took place in 1958, and like 1958 by virtue of their regular season record, the Peoria Chiefs appeared to be the favorites to defeat the Hill Valley Lightning Bolts.  The Chiefs had won 106 games and managed to hold off the Wilmington Hornets to win the Eastern Division Championship.  Their opponent, the Hill Valley Lightning Bolts had won the Western Division by seventeen games, but had failed to crack the century mark in wins.  Well, sometimes history has a way of repeating itself.  Although not as dominant as they were in the 1958 World Series, Hill Valley did manage to defeat Peoria 4 games to 2, compiling three shutouts in the process.  Hill Valley was led offensively by World Series MVP Luis Aparicio, who hit .417 for the series and Dick Gernert, who hit .364.  Also making a difference was Roger Maris who clubbed a three run homer in his only official at bat of the series to defeat Peoria closer Ryne Duren in a thrilling come from behind game one victory that set the tone for the series.  Leading the Hill Valley staff was Sam Jones who went 1-0 with a 2.40 E.R.A.  Peoria's offense was led by Joe Cunningham, who hit .333, with Peoria's only home run in the series.  Larry Jackson starred for Peoria on the mound going 1-1 with a 1.38 E.R.A., his only loss coming by a 1-0 score in game six of the series.  

    During the regular season, the Chiefs won the Eastern Division by 5 games over the Wilmington Hornets.  In the Western Division, Hill Valley won its second consecutive division championship by 17 games over the Kansas City Athletics.  The league was paced offensively by Chiefs outfielder and MVP Willie Mays, who hit .329 with 31 HRs, 117 RBIs, and 35 stolen bases, and Babe Ruth Award winner Ernie Banks of the Oneonta Tigers, who hit .307 with a league record 61 HRs, a league leading 141 RBIs, and scored 115 runs.  Other offensive stars were Eddie Mathews of the Wilmington Hornets, who clubbed 49 home runs, and knocked in 138, and teammate Dick Stuart who launched 46 home runs and knocked in 113.  On the pitching side, Jim Owens of the Kansas City Athletics won Rookie of the Year, Bud Daley of Peoria was the choice for Cy Young over Roger Craig of Wilmington, and Ryne Duren of Peoria set a league record with 53 saves, and was the Rolaids Reliever.  Robin Roberts also had his own moment of brilliance as he threw the season's only no hitter.

In a thriller the Hill Valley Lightning Bolts staged a dramatic comeback then

held on to win over the Peoria Chiefs by a score of 8 to 4 at New York.

 

Hill Valley erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 6

runners on 5 hits.  The big moment was provided by Roger Maris who quieted

the crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 1st of the season).  Hill

Valley ended up with 11 hits for the game while Peoria had 6. 

 

The victory went to Larry Sherry(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.

Ryne Duren(0-1) was given the loss in relief.  Denton Edwards was all smiles

after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful

feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a

pin drop when we took the lead.  But, hey, that's what makes baseball so

great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.'

Peoria Chiefs beat the Hill Valley Lightning Bolts 6 to 2.

 

Larry Jackson(1-0) pitched a fine game.  He allowed 2 hits and 3 walks in 5

innings.  Hill Valley was out-hit by Peoria, 9 hits to 6. 

 

Jackson got relief help from Harvey Haddix who gained credit for his 1st save.

Early Wynn(0-1) was the loser.  He surrendered 6 runs and 8 hits in 7
