Chiefs Top Knights for Title!
1957 World Series MVP Roy Face
1957 AARBL World Series MVP Roy Face
The 1957 World Series was a matchup between two 100+ win teams, the Eastern Division's Peoria Chiefs, and the Western Division's So Cal Knights.  The series started at So Cal with a 3-2 knights win that was close throughout.  In game 2, the Chiefs, behind the offense of Willie Mays, and the pitching of Harvey Haddix, seized home field advantage with a 7-3 win.  Next the series shifted to Peoria where the Knights took two of three, and almost closed the Chiefs out in 5.  But, Peoria managed to piece together a come from behind victory with 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning of game 5 staving off elimination.  The teams then traveled back to So Cal where the Chiefs managed to edge the Knights in two close contests.  The decisive blow came off the bat of Charlie Maxwell, whose two run home run in the top of the eleventh inning of game seven was too much for the Knights to overcome.  In addition to Maxwell, Willie Mays, who collected 15 hits and hit .436 for the series, and Don Hoak, who scored seven runs and knocked in six were the offensive stars for Peoria.  So Cal was led offensively by Roy Sievers, who hit .387 for the series, and Duke Snider, who hit .346 and clubbed 4 home runs.  So Cal's Robin Roberts was the dominant starting pitcher in the series as he went 2-0 with a 2.38 E.R.A.  For Peoria, Harvey Haddix was 1-0 with a 3.07 E.R.A.  However, the real pitching star for the series was Peoria's Roy Face, who threw ten scoreless innings, won three games in relief, and walked away with the MVP honors.

During the regular season, the Chiefs won the Eastern Division by 7 games over last season's champs, the Wilmington Hornets.  In the Western Division, So Cal repeated as division champions, and set a league record with a 108 win regular season.  The league was paced offensively by Ted Williams of So Cal who flirted with .400 all season, and finished with a league record .388 batting average.  Williams added 48 home runs and 131 RBI's and won the league's MVP and Babe Ruth awards  Teammates Duke Snider and Roy Sievers along with Peoria's Willie Mays and Ernie Banks of the Oneonta Tigers had big seasons as well.  On the pitching side, Frank Sullivan of the Des Moines Dusters was the choice for Cy Young over Robin Roberts of So Cal and Jim Bunning of the North Bend Tadjers. Bunning meanwhile, was a unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year, and Roy Face of Peoria was the Rolaids Reliever.

Ray Boone had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the So Cal Knights outscored the Peoria

Chiefs 7 to 6.

Peoria never recovered after So Cal took the lead in the top of the 2nd inning

as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Gus

Triandos who silenced the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 2nd

of the season).  Despite losing, Peoria out-hit So Cal 15 to 11.
