WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Bob Lemon robbed Ted Kluszewski of a base hit.

Willie Mays connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at Yankee Stadium as the

very potent Peoria Chiefs won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the

hopeless Carolina Grays in 11 innings by the count of 8 to 7.

The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings.  Peoria ended up winning

it in the 11th inning.  After an out was recorded, Rance Pless keyed the

rally when he was hit by a pitch.  Bobby Avila followed and he cleared the

fences for a two-run home run (his 10th of the season) making Peoria the

winners and sending the 47,521 fans home happy.  Peoria had 13 hits for the

afternoon while Carolina had 7.

The win went to Willard Schmidt(12-5) who allowed 1 run in 2/3 of an inning.

Mel Parnell(1-3) was hit with the loss in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an

inning allowing 1 hit and no walks.

Bob Friend went 9 strong innings as the Bayside Brewers staged a dramatic

comeback over the Carolina Grays by a score of 2 to 1 at Polo

Grounds.

Bayside scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 2 runs on

2 hits.  After two outs Billy Klaus initiated the scoring spurt when he

banged out a single.  Roberto Clemente was next and he lifted one out of the

park for a two run home run (his 5th of the season).  Bayside rapped out 8

hits for the afternoon.

Friend(13-7) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. John

Antonelli(8-8) was charged with the loss.  Stu Blake was all smiles after the

game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and

did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when

we took the lead.  But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the

great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til it’s over.'

Lew Burdette(12-11) thrilled the fans at Memorial Stadium as he crafted a

no-hit masterpiece against the floundering Carolina Grays.  The Des Moines

Dusters won by a final score of 8 to 0.

Burdette was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Carolina batters

down like so many dominoes.  He only walked one Carolina batter.  The tension

was mounting with every inning after the 6th.  Burdette appeared oblivious

himself to the mounting history until two were out in the 9th.  Only then,

did he allow himself one deep sigh and a slow trip around the mound.  Des

Moines rapped out 8 hits for the night.

Don Kaiser(3-12) took the loss. After the game, Burdette was heard to say,

'This is something I have dreamt about since I was a little boy - to have it

come true is just amazing!'

In a wild and wooly game at Busch Stadium, the Peoria Chiefs finally topped

the North Bend Tadjers by the score of 16 to 10 in.

John Crimian(1-0) got the win with a steady relief outing.  He went 1 inning

surrendering 2 hits and no walks.  Peoria lit up the scoreboard in the 2nd

inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 3 hits and the 7th inning when they had

8 runs on 5 hits.  This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead

changed hands 5 times.

Hersh Freeman(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  It was another victory

for Peoria at Busch Stadium.  Now their winning streak stands at 6 games.

'We're on quite a roll lately' said Michael Tricarico.  'I just hope we can

keep it going.'
