Bob Friend went 9 strong innings as the Bayside Brewers
staged a dramatic
comeback over the Carolina Grays by a score of 2 to 1 at
Polo
Grounds.
Bayside scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th
inning with 2 runs on
2 hits. After two outs Billy Klaus initiated the
scoring spurt when he
banged out a single. Roberto Clemente
was next and he lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run (his 5th of the season). Bayside rapped out 8
hits for the afternoon.
Friend(13-7) picked up the
complete game victory, allowing 1 run. John
Antonelli(8-8) was charged with the loss. Stu Blake was all
smiles after the
game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a
beautiful feeling - and
did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have
heard a pin drop when
we took the lead.
But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the
great sage Yogi Berra says,
'it's not over 'til it’s over.'

Lew Burdette(12-11)
thrilled the fans at Memorial Stadium as he crafted a
no-hit masterpiece against the
floundering Carolina Grays. The Des
Moines
Dusters won by a final score of 8 to 0.
Burdette was obviously at the top of his game as he set
the Carolina batters
down like so many dominoes. He only walked one Carolina batter. The tension
was mounting with every inning
after the 6th. Burdette appeared
oblivious
himself to the mounting history
until two were out in the 9th. Only
then,
did he allow himself one deep
sigh and a slow trip around the mound.
Des
Moines rapped out 8 hits for the night.
Don Kaiser(3-12) took the loss.
After the game, Burdette was heard to say,
'This is something I have dreamt about since I was a
little boy - to have it
come true is just amazing!'

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Red Wilson blocked the plate, saving a
run!
Bot 9th: Roy McMillan robbed Red Schoendienst
of a base hit.
History was made in Alexandria
as Connie Johnson(2-0) tossed a no-hitter and
the Butte Stompers
defeated the Alexandria Rock Hounds by the score of 9 to
0.
Johnson had an evening to remember. He only walked one Alexandria
batter.
The Butte
players and coaches started to leave Johnson alone with his
thoughts after the game reached
the 7th inning. By the time the 9th
inning
rolled around, you could hear a
pin drop every time he went to his wind-up -
and an explosion after every
out. Butte
banged out 11 on the night.
Paul Foytack(1-2) was given the loss.
He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and
5 walks in 5 and 1/3
innings. 'Johnson was simply incredible'
losing pitcher
Foytack said. 'I hate to admit this but I'd pay to watch a
man pitch like
that'
