Right fielder Carl Furillo
ripped 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Ebbets Field as
the streaking Peoria Chiefs staged a comeback win over
the So Cal Knights by
the count of 15 to 12.
Peoria bats
came alive with a big top of the 9th inning showing no mercy on So
Cal as they
plated 10 runs on 10 hits. The big
moment was provided by
Furillo who quieted the home crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb. Peoria
lit up the scoreboard in the 9th inning which saw them
plate 10 runs on 10
hits. So Cal
scored in 6 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept
them from victory.
Tom Poholsky(14-4) got credit
for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Ellis Kinder(2-5) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 7 runs in
1 inning and saw his ERA increase from 3.47 to 5.06.
Scott Campbell was understandably not very talkative after
his team's tough
loss. He quickly showered and changed and when
asked about the game had a
terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a
heart-breaker to
lose. Our guys
gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin'
on us this afternoon'

History was made in Fremont
as Murray Dickson(8-7) tossed a no-hitter and the
Fremont Fear defeated the lifeless Alexandria Rock Hounds
by the score of 16
to 0.
The partisan crowd cheered every Alexandria
out from the 7th inning on. He
walked 3 Alexandria
batters. The tension started to build
around the 6th
inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was
electrified. Fremont
lit up the
scoreboard in the 3rd inning
when they had 7 runs on 6 hits and the 4th
inning when they had 4 runs on 4
hits. Fremont
rapped out 18 hits for the
afternoon.
Mike Garcia(8-14) was the
loser. He was touched for 11 hits and 2
walks in 3
innings. 'Dickson was simply incredible' losing
pitcher Garcia said. 'I
hate to admit this but I'd pay
to watch a man pitch like that'

First baseman Ted Kluszewski
rocketed 4 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Yankee
Stadium as the potent Peoria Chiefs won in their last
at-bat beating the So
Cal Knights by the count of 7 to 6.
Peoria won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th
inning. After an out
was recorded, Kluszewski blasted a solo shot (his 41st of the season)
resulting in an exciting win for
Peoria and a raucous post-game celebration
by the home town fans. Peoria and So Cal each finished the night
with 9
hits.
The win was credited to Jack Meyer(6-4)
who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 2
runs. Ellis Kinder(1-3)
was given the loss in relief. He gave up
1 run and 1
hit in 1/3 of an inning.
'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my
swing and made some
adjustments,' Kluszewski said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are
getting
you out certain ways, you've got
to make changes.'

Ernie Banks slammed a homerun and scored 3 times as the
Alexandria Rock Hounds
staged a dramatic comeback over the North Bend Tadjers by
a score of 11 to 8
at Busch Stadium.
Alexandria had the winning rally in the 9th inning
scoring 5 runners on 3
hits. The
highlight belonged to Dale Long who deflated the crowd as he
tripled with all three runners coming home. North Bend was not lacking for
run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet
victory eluded them as
they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win
ballgames.
Don Mossi(3-3) picked up the
victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Ray
Narleski(3-5) suffered the loss
in relief. Derek Lipson was not very
talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in the mood for questions,
but I'm sure Dennis VanLangen
will be glad to talk about the game as long as
you have questions to ask.'

Chet Nichols(2-1) was on top of
his game in North Bend as he tossed a beauty
of a no-hitter against the North
Bend Tadjers.
The Fremont Fear won by a
score of 3 to 0.
Nichols was obviously at the top of his game as he set
the North Bend batters
down like so many dominoes. He walked 4 North Bend
batters. The tension
started to build around the 6th
inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was
electrified. The North Bend batters
went down meekly in the bottom of the
9th.
Ned Garver(1-5) was given the loss.
'You probably have a better chance of
winning the lottery than this
happening,' said Nichols, 'I don't expect it to
sink in for awhile,' he said.
'I'm numb right now, I'm overwhelmed.'

Tom Poholsky carried a
no-hitter into the 7th inning as the Peoria Chiefs beat
the Bayside Brewers by a score
of 8 to 0.
Poholsky(1-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too
much for the
Bayside batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 1
hit and 1 walk
in 9 innings. The right-handed Poholsky
had his no-hit bid broken up by Al
Kaline who singled with one out in the 7th inning. Peoria
finished with 8
hits in the victory.
Joe Nuxhall(0-1) suffered the loss.
'He came out with good stuff,' Michael
Tricarico said about Poholsky.
'He threw the ball good from the first pitch
on.'
