Willie Mays had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Briggs Stadium
as the Peoria Chiefs,
running on all cylinders, ripped the Butte Stompers by a
large 15 to 4
margin.
Butte fell behind quickly as the Peoria offense came
through in the first
inning with 3 runs.
Richie Ashburn led off and he drew a walk. Cal Abrams
was next and he drew a walk. Mays then tripled scoring two
baserunners. Ted
Kluszewski struck out, unable to help the rally. George Kell stepped into
the box and worked the squeeze play to perfection scoring
the final run of
the inning. Peoria
lit up the scoreboard in the 2nd inning when they had 7
runs on 5 hits.
Peoria had 19 hits overall, while Butte had 8.
Vern Law(1-0) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for
the victory. Jack
