In a two run game the So Cal Knights got by the Peoria Chiefs by the score of

10 to 8.

So Cal bats came alive with a big 8th inning when they blasted Peoria for 9

runs on 7 hits. The key at-bat was by Bob Nieman who deflated the crowd as

he doubled plating two runs. Warren Hacker relieved and was untouched by

Peoria as he recorded the save, his 1st.

The victory went to Al Sima(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing 2 runs. Mickey

McDermott(2-2) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning

giving up 6 hits and 3 walks.

Jim Greengrass slammed 2 homeruns as the Fremont Fear destroyed the Butte

Stompers by a score of 18 to 4 at Briggs Stadium.

Greengrass enjoyed a great day at the plate. He emptied the bases with a

Grand Slam homerun in the 1st inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 27th

of the season) in the 3rd inning. Fremont kept the scorekeepers busy in the

1st inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 3 hits and the 4th inning plating 5

runs. Fremont had 17 hits overall, while Butte had 12.

Murray Dickson(8-12) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Jack

Harshman(11-10) took the loss. The Fremont ballclub's record now stands at

59-61. With the loss, Butte has a record of 4-6 lately, 60-54 overall.

hitter at Polo Grounds where the Oswego Panthers beat the Carolina Grays 10

to 1.

Rhodes provided the offensive punch. He blasted a solo shot in the 1st inning

and smashed a two-run homer (his 5th of the season) in the 4th inning.

Oswego had 15 hits for the night.

Consuegra(6-5) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Ruben

topped the Oswego Panthers by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. North Bend won it in

Left fielder Jim Greengrass went deep at FENWAY PARK as the Fremont Fear won

in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Bayside Brewers by the count of 5

to 4.

Fremont had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits.

Greengrass started the inning off right when he stroked a one-base hit.

Mickey Mantle stepped up to the plate and he tripled plating a run. Sid

Bob Porterfield was able to finish what he started and was credited with a

complete game as the Peoria Chiefs pulled out a win over the Des Moines

Dusters by a score of 4 to 1 at Yankee Stadium.

Peoria scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3 hits.

Ted Kluszewski started the inning off right when he lined a one-base hit.

After an out was recorded, Alvin Dark stepped in and he slapped a base-hit.

Dark took second on the throw. Carl Furillo then clubbed a three-run home

run (his 4th of the season) giving Peoria the victory as 62,023 happy fans

celebrated wildly. Peoria and Des Moines each finished the night with 11

hits.

Early Wynn went 9 strong innings as the Des Moines Dusters pulled out a win

over the So Cal Knights by a score of 1 to 0 at MEMORIAL STADIUM.

The game was decided in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Fred

Hatfield was hit by a pitch. Frank House stepped up next and he drew a walk.

One out later, Walker Cooper stepped up to the plate and he stroked a single

giving Des Moines the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Des

Moines finished with 8 hits in the victory.

Wynn(6-4) was credited with the shutout. Billy Hoeft(2-2) was charged with the

loss in relief. 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said

Wynn. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure

and everything went well.'

Don Bollweg had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Don Mossi closed the door on North Bend

at Comiskey Park as the Oswego Panthers beat the North Bend Tadjers 15 to

13.

Bollweg provided much of the offense. He doubled plating two runs in the 3rd

inning, delivered a single in the 5th inning, lined a base-hit plating two

runs in the 5th inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 8th inning. Oswego

provided plenty of action in the 3rd inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 5

hits and the 5th inning when they had 7 runs on 7 hits. This was the kind of

game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

Wilmington fans certainly got their money's worth at Wrigley Field. Bob

Turley(6-2) pitched a rare no-hitter as the Butte Stompers toppled the

Wilmington Hornets 8 to 0.

Turley was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Wilmington batters

down like so many dominoes. He walked 5 Wilmington batters. What a day for

the fans. They were on the edge of their seats from the 7th inning on. With

every out, the electricity in the air mounted. Turley recorded 11

strikeouts. Butte had a total of 12 hits for the game.

Billy Pierce(0-3) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving

up 8 hits and 5 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. 'Turley pitched one heck of a

game!' Jim Nancarrow said. 'He didn't get away with any bad pitches because

he just didn't throw any bad pitches. What a performance!'

History was made in Peoria as Bob Porterfield(3-1) tossed a no-hitter and the

Peoria Chiefs defeated the Carolina Grays by the score of 1 to

0.

Porterfield gave the home town fans an evening that they'll never forget. He

walked 6 Carolina batters. The tension started to build around the 6th

inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. Peoria had 8 hits for

the night.

John Antonelli(1-3) was the losing pitcher. It was a tough loss for him as he

did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work.

It took a while to pry Porterfield way from his teammates as they all wanted

to show their appreciation and joy. Finally, however, Michael Tricarico got

to offer his own congratulations with a big bear hug and the comment, 'That

was one of the best pitched games I have seen in all my years in baseball -

Porterfield was masterful out there tonight!'

Jim Hegan had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Peoria Chiefs beat
